Jason Momoa to produce The Pirate with David Leitch
Deadline confirmed that Will Dunn wrote the spec script for The Pirate, which is being developed as a potential starring vehicle for Momoa.
Leitch, along with Kelly McCormick, negotiates to produce through their 87North banner, while Momoa negotiates to produce under his On the Roam banner. Reports describe the story as “The Raid set on a pirate ship,” though plot details remain limited.
Momoa’s recent projects include leading Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie, released in April 2025, and featuring in Apple TV+’s Chief of War. He will return as Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Three and will soon start shooting for Legendary’s Street Fighter adaptation, expanding his action-heavy portfolio with several major franchises worldwide.
David Leitch produced Nobody 2, now in theaters, and directs the upcoming How to Rob a Bank for Amazon MGM, with strong industry attention. Leitch also produces The Pirate, with his 87North partner Kelly McCormick negotiating to officially join as co-producer on the film.
Will Dunn, who wrote the script, previously worked on Marvel’s Ms. Marvel series. Reports state that Amazon MGM Studios secured rights to The Pirate after a competitive bidding process. The deal highlighted the project’s strong demand and reportedly positioned it as a priority development for the studio.
This update was first reported by The InSneider newsletter. It noted that Amazon MGM had landed the spec script ahead of other interested studios. Further, the studio has not released any casting or production timeline beyond Jason Momoa being eyed for the lead role.
