Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Son Would Be ‘Terrified’ of Dad Seeing Him Act

The Long Walk star Cooper Hoffman opened up about his late father Philip Seymour Hoffman, who was best known for his acclaimed performances in movies such as 2005’s Capote, Charlie Wilson’s War, Doubt, and The Hunger Games movies. The Oscar-winning actor passed away in 2014 at the age of 46 due to drug intoxication.

While reflecting on the fast progress of his acting career during a recent interview with GQ, Hoffman, who debuted in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2021 movie Licorice Pizza, said he finds himself remembering his famous father. The rising actor admitted that he would have like to ask his father’s advice about work despite being terrified of his reaction towards his projects.

“The only person I really wanted to talk to was my dad,” He shared. “He’s my favorite actor, but he’s also my dad. He’s also not here. A lot of people idolize their parents because they’re great parents. It’s a different thing to idolize your parent because you love their art. So as much as I would love him to be here and talk to him about acting, I also would be terrified to have him see my stuff and judge my stuff.”

He continued, “Not that he would judge it, because he was a very empathetic person, and he would probably — hopefully — hold my hand through all of it. I get to figure this out on my own. But also, I would love his advice. And I would also just love my dad.”

For his acting debut performance, Cooper Hoffman received his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. Since then, he has starred in a few movies such as 2023’s Wildcat and 2024’s Saturday Night. He will next be seen in Lionsgate’s upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King’s dystopian novel The Long Walk, which hails from director Francis Lawrence. The latter also worked with Philip Seymour Hoffman on the Hunger Games franchise.
