Why Home Alone’s Director Is Against a Reboot With Macaulay Culkin
Fans have been clamoring for a Home Alone reboot for some time, but the director of the original film is still against it.
Why is Chris Columbus against a Home Alone reboot?
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight recently, Chris Columbus — who directed both Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York — said that it would be almost impossible to capture the feeling of the original films when it comes to rebooting the iconic franchise.
“I think Home Alone really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that,” Columbus said. “I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.”
Columbus’ comments come after Macaulay Culkin, the star of the original films, teased that he was open to returning to the franchise, and even said he had ideas of how it could happen. Although Columbus is against a reboot, Disney has attempted it.
In 2021, Disney released a Disney+-exclusive movie titled Home Sweet Home Alone, which starred Archie Yates, Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, and Kenan Thompson. The film largely followed the same story as the original, but received mostly negative reviews following its release.
