Cannes 2025 Winner It Was Just an Accident Debuts Trailer

NEON has shared the official It Was Just an Accident trailer for its newest acclaimed crime thriller. Prior to its U.S. release, the movie had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the competition’s most-coveted Palme d’Or award. The award-winning studio will be pushing an awards campaign for the film in multiple categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature.

What is It Was Just an Accident about?

“Inspired by Panahi’s second Iranian incarceration, It Was Just An Accident follows what begins as a minor accident as it sets in motion a series of escalating consequences,” reads the official synopsis.

It Was Just an Accident is written, directed, and produced by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. The movie stars Vahid Mobasseri as Vahid, Mariam Afshari as Shiva, Ebrahim Azizi as Eghbal, Hadis Pakbaten as Golrokh, Majid Panahi as the groom, and Mohamad Ali Elyasmehr as Hamid. Since its debut, the film has already garnered a perfect Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 43 reviews.

This marks the second collaboration between NEON and Panahi after previously working together in 2021’s The Year of the Everlasting Storm. Producers are Philippe Martin, Sandrine Dumas, and Christel Henon, with David Thion and Lilina Eche serving as associate producers. The film is a Les Films Pelléas and Jafar Panahi Production from Iran, France, and Luxembourg.

It Was Just An Accident is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on October 15.
