James Gunn on if Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn Will Return in DCU
DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently spoke about Margot Robbie‘s future as Harley Quinn in the DCU. Robbie portrayed the character in three movies: Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021). They were all DC Extended Universe (DCEU) projects, even though Gunn wrote and directed the last one.
What did James Gunn say about Margot Robbie’s potential return as Harley Quinn?
Gunn was asked whether Robbie would return as Harley Quinn in the DCU during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The filmmaker responded, “That will be revealed down the line.” While this might not be the answer that fans were perhaps looking for on the subject, it still keeps the hope alive for the DCU debut of Robbie’s Harley. Notably, Lady Gaga portrayed Harley “Lee” Quinzel, an iteration of Harley Quinn, in Joker: Folie à Deux (2024), the sequel to 2019’s Joker.
In a recent newsletter, The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision speculated on the prospects of Robbie joining the DCU. The report claimed that Robbie could “theoretically but probably not” still play Harley.
In response to a question about whether she was retiring as Harley following Lady Gaga’s inclusion in the Joker: Folie à Deux cast, Robbie told Variety in 2024, “I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her.”
The actress further noted that Harley was a “fun” character who “can go in so many different directions.” She added, “You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”
It’s unclear whether Robbie’s opinion on the subject has changed since then. As things stand, Gunn and others at DCU haven’t confirmed whether Robbie is returning as Harley or if they are looking to cast another actor for the role.
