Why Leonardo DiCaprio Won’t Direct a Movie Revealed

Leonardo DiCaprio recently opened up on why he’ll never step behind the camera and direct a movie.

Why won’t Leonardo DiCaprio direct a movie?

In a recent profile for Esquire that saw director Paul Thomas Anderson and DiCaprio interviewing one another, the pair discussed the late Adam Somner, a first assistant director that worked under several directors, including Anderson, prior to his passing in 2024.

According to DiCaprio, watching directors like Anderson and Martin Scorsese work with so many different people showed him why he doesn’t have the “urge” to do it himself.

“There was nobody like him. The fact that this man would just go to the utmost extremes to somehow bring everything into order was one of the most magical things I would see in my whole career,” said DiCaprio. “And he worked with the greatest directors in the world, and they trusted him. It allowed me to watch you or somebody like a Marty juggle so many different departments with so many different questions, which is why I don’t have a powerful urge to direct.

“Because I’m just trying to figure out what is this line going to be. I would go into a spiraling vortex for hours about how to say that line. I know we get emotional talking about him, but there was just absolutely no one better.”

While DiCaprio has no desire to direct himself, he’ll likely continue working with some of the very best. His next role is in Anderson’s film One Battle After Another, which is set to release on September 26, 2025.
