Talks of Weapons Prequel & Its Story Have Begun After Box Office Success

A Weapons prequel based on Aunt Gladys’ origin is reportedly being discussed by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. The origin of Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan, was left unexplored in the movie. Zach Cregger’s Weapons has emerged as a hit at the box office and has grossed over $80 million globally as of now. It dropped in theaters across the globe on August 8, 2025.

Weapons prequel centered on Aunt Gladys likely to happen

According to a recent report, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are planning a prequel to Zach Cregger’s recently released movie, Weapons. This prequel will be centered around the origin of the character of Aunt Gladys, portrayed by Amy Madigan on screen.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger initially had included Gladys’ origin in the movie, but later removed it due to issues with the movie’s length. The filmmaker is currently working on the Resident Evil reboot he wrote himself.

However, with the massive success of Weapons, the studio might be looking to expand the universe further soon. At the time of writing, both Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have made an official announcement regarding the possible prequel.

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter previously, Zach Cregger shared he had many projects lined up to work on after Weapons. He told the outlet, “I have Resident Evil. I wrote it, and I love the story. And then I have a sci-fi movie right after that that’s original. And then I have another finished script that I want to do after that. It actually takes place in the DC Universe, but it’s a totally original and it’s not a superhero movie. I wrote that before I wrote Barbarian. Then I have another one that I’m working on that feels like Night Crawler. But all of those are original.”
