Emma Thompson Fights for Her Life in Dead of Winter Trailer

Vertical has shared the official Dead of Winter trailer for its newest action thriller, starring Academy Award winner Emma Thompson. Following its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, the movie is now slated to arrive in theaters on September 26, 2025

What is Dead of Winter about?

“Hit by a blizzard, a grief-stricken loner gets lost among backroads near a Minnesotan lake and stops for help at a remote cabin in the woods,” reads the synopsis. Here she discovers a young woman kidnapped by a desperate couple who are armed and intent on murder. Isolated and without cell service, this unlikely hero realizes she is the woman’s only hope of survival.”

Dead of Winter is directed by Brian Kirk from a screenplay written by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb. This is different from the Thompson’s previous comedic and dramatic roles from popular movies like The Remains of the Day, Sense and Sensibility, Love Actually, and the Harry Potter franchise. The acclaimed actress recently reunited with Renée Zellweger for Bridget Jones: Mad About Boy, where she reprised her role as Doctor Rawlings. She will next be seen in the upcoming live-action mystery comedy Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie with Hugh Jackman.

Besides Thompson, the cast also includes Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca, Gaia Wise, Cuan Hosty-Blaney, Dalton Leeb, Paul Hamilton, Lloyd Hutchinson, and Brian F. O’Byrne. The movie is produced by Greg Silverman, Jon Berg, Jonas Katzenstein, and Maximilian Leo. The creative team also includes director of photography Christopher Ross, editor Tim Murrell, and composer Volker Bertelmann.
