Superman: James Gunn Defends DCU Character’s ‘Bad’ Name
Superman director James Gunn shared his reaction to one fan’s negative comment about the Man of Steel’s dog, Krypto. This comes after the beloved character officially made his live-action cinematic debut in the David Corenswet-led movie, which is still Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
What did James Gunn say about Krypto’s name?
On his personal Threads account, Gunn responded to a fan dissing Krypto’s name by calling it “bad writing.” He defended the beloved superpowered dog’s name by revealing its significance to Superman.

For non-comic book fans, Gunn wasn’t the one who came up with the name Krypto. The fan-favorite character was originally introduced in March 1955 by Otto Binder, Curt Swan, and Sy Barry for DC Comics’ Adventure Comics series. After making his DC Universe debut in Gunn’s Superman movie, Krypto the Superdog is also expected to appear in Milly Alcock’s Supergirl movie.
Superman was written and directed by Gunn, based on the DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The movie stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Anthony Carrigan as Metarmorpho, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, and Neva Howell as Martha Kent, along with Alan Tudyk, Michael Rooker, and Grace Chan.
