Cillian Murphy Stars in Steve Trailer for Netflix Movie Based on Acclaimed Novel

Netflix has released the Steve trailer, previewing the upcoming reimagining of Max Porter’s bestselling novel and starring Academy Award-winner Cillian Murphy. Steve is set to release on Netflix on October 3, 2025.

“Set in the mid-90s, Steve is a reimagining of Max Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy. The film follows a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve and his students at a last-chance reform school amidst a world that has forsaken them,” reads the official synopsis. “As Steve fights to protect the school’s integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve’s struggles, we meet Shy, a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence.”

Alongside Cillian Murphy, Steve also stars Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo, and Emily Watson, Douggie McMeekin, Youssef Kerkour, Luke Ayres, Joshua J Parker, Araloyin Oshunremi, Tut Nyuot, Tom Moya, Ahmed Ismail, Joshua Barry, Archie Fisher, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Priyanga Burford, George Fouracres, Marcus Garvey, Ruby Ashbourne-Serkis, and Roger Allam.

Steve is directed by Tim Mielants from a screenplay written by Max Porter, with Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow providing the music. The film is produced by Murphy, Alan Moloney, and Tina Pawlik, with Max Porter also serving as an executive producer. The creative team also includes cinematographer Robrecht Heyvaert and editor Danielle Palmer.
