James Gunn Wanted To Make Superman ‘Huggable,’ Calls Batman ‘a F–ing Maniac’

James Gunn spoke about how the personalities of Superman and Batman influence their suits during an interaction with David Corenswet in the behind-the-scenes documentary, Adventures in the Making of Superman. Gunn is the director of the new Superman movie and co-head of the DC Universe, whereas Corenswent is the franchise’s Man of Steel.

James Gunn details differences between Superman and Batman’s suits

The new documentary, Adventures in the Making of Superman, confirmed how James Gunn decided to keep Superman’s red trunks from DC Comics. Corenswent argued in favor of the trunks during costume fittings, as shown in the documentary. “The thought that I always had was what you said: Superman needs to be huggable,” he tells Gunn. “And there is something about this [suit] that’s disarming.”

Gunn mentions how Batman’s suit also reflects his personality. “Even with Batman, if I was doing Batman, I’d get into it,” the filmmaker says. “Like, Batman is a f—— maniac. He puts on a scary bat costume and goes out and tries to scare people” (via ComicBook).

The Guardians of the Galaxy helmer previously mentioned in multiple interviews that it was Corenswet who convinced him to keep the trunks. “You were looking for a way to make them look cool, or you were looking for a function, an explanation to justify having them,” the 32-year-old actor told Gunn during a joint interview with Fandango ahead of the movie’s premiere. “And my thing was, ‘Maybe they’re supposed to look a little silly?’ Maybe the reason he wears them is to look a little silly. Basically, to undermine how powerful he really is.”

Superman hit theaters on July 11, 2025, receiving positive reviews from critics and performing well at the box office. The first mainstream Batman feature of the DCU franchise will be The Brave and the Bold, which currently doesn’t have a confirmed release date.

Adventures in the Making of Superman is part of the movie’s digital home media release, which becomes available on August 15, 2025.
