David Corenswet’s Superman Takes His Trunks Off in New BTS Footage

David Corenswet appears in new Superman behind-the-scenes footage, revealing a version of his suit without the classic red trunks during a costume test. The clip shows the alternate look briefly before the final design was chosen, sparking discussion among fans.

New footage shows the making of Superman

At the 4:58 mark in the “Adventures in the Making of Superman” featurette, David Corenswet appears in a trunkless version of the Superman suit during his costume test. The hour-long behind-the-scenes special includes this footage in the film’s upcoming Digital, 4K UHD, and Blu-ray release.

The featurette covers multiple production moments, including Corenswet selecting Clark Kent’s glasses and a table read with the cast. It also shows him filming a flying kiss scene with Lois Lane.

In a previous interview with Fandango, director James Gunn said, “One of the biggest questions was, ‘Were we gonna have trunks, or were we gonna not have trunks?’” He noted Zack Snyder had tested both options for his Superman films before deciding against them.

Gunn also explained to the press that they tried several suit variations before Corenswet helped influence the final choice. “One of the things David said is that Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him… He dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows that hope and shows that positivity,” Gunn said. The trunkless costume test provides the clearest look yet at what the DCU Superman would have looked like without the classic design element. The final suit restores the red trunks to live-action reportedly for the first time since 2006’s Superman Returns.

Superman has grossed around $580 million worldwide, making it 2025’s highest-grossing superhero film. The movie stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. It also features Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and others.
