Former Storm Actor Has Key Advice for Marvel’s New X-Men Recruit
Former X-Men star Alexandra Shipp recently shared her thoughts on the future of Storm in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a new interview, she offered candid advice for whoever takes on the role next and revealed which storyline she hopes Marvel will finally explore. Her comments shed light on what the next chapter of Storm could look like.
Alexandra Shipp on what Marvel’s Storm actor should do in X-Men reboot
In a Collider interview, Alexandra Shipp said, “You have to make it your own,” emphasizing the importance of individuality over comparison.
“People want to compare how Halle did her Storm to my Storm… I don’t think that’s fair to the actor, and I don’t think that’s fair to the audience.” Shipp noted her own version of Storm was younger, untrained, and influenced by a street fighter persona, which informed her character’s flight and combat style.
When asked what aspect of Storm she hopes to see explored in the MCU, Shipp pointed to a storyline involving Black Panther. “I would love to see Storm after her and T’Challa. I want to see that part of Storm’s backstory brought into the through line, into her story at that moment.” She noted that no film has ever portrayed Storm’s “African goddess” side.
Shipp has previously been critical of how little material she was given as Storm. In a 2019 interview, she said, “Storm barely has anything to say… we never talk. So it would be really nice if we weren’t piled into yet another jam-packed cast” (via ComicBookMovie). In 2023, she confirmed she had no interest in returning. “I think there are other women who can take on that role and really kill it” (via ET Online).
The X-Men reboot is currently in early development under director Jake Schreier. Rumored cast considerations include Ayo Edebiri for Storm and Cynthia Erivo. Kevin Feige said the Secret Wars arc would help introduce “a new age of mutants and of the X-Men.”
Marvel has not announced a release date yet.
