Weapons Reviews & Rotten Tomatoes Score Prove It’s a Must Watch

Zach Cregger’s Weapons has received rave reviews from critics and scored highly on Rotten Tomatoes as a result. Releasing on Friday, August 8, 2025, the horror film is being described as one of the scariest movies of Josh Brolin’s career thus far. Alongside Brolin, the film also stars Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, and Benedict Wong, among many others.

What critics are saying about Weapons in reviews

Weapons is receiving high praise from critics and being lauded as a “horror achievement.” The film revolves around the mysterious disappearance of numerous children from the same class who all went missing on the same night and at the same time. This leads to chaos as locals try to decode the mystery behind the disappearances.

Here is what critics are saying about the movie.

John Nugent of Empire Magazine wrote, “A hugely accomplished horror achievement, and a significant step up from Barbarian: tense, sad, hilarious, unsettling, ridiculously entertaining, and ultimately oddly uplifting.”

Benjamin Lee of The Guardian compared Weapons to a Stephen King story and stated, “It’s a tantalising setup, pitched somewhere between Stephen King and the Brothers Grimm, and Cregger’s careful slow build keeps us in thrall for the most part, eager to see just how the puzzle-pieces fit.”

Peter Debruge of Variety described the movie as a “cruel bedtime story” and stated that “Cregger has achieved something remarkable here, crafting a cruel and twisted bedtime story of the sort the Brothers Grimm might have spun.”

Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting praised the film’s humor and practical effects, writing, “This is a horror movie that trusts its audience, while also delivering on practical effects-driven violence, methodically employed scares, and a biting sense of humor that’ll leave you squealing and squirming in equal measure.”

Weapons reviews lead to stellar Rotten Tomatoes score

Weapons has received one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores for a major horror release in quite some time. The movie has earned a score of 95 percent on the Tomatometer based on 96 reviews. Previously, it had a perfect 100 percent on the Tomatometer based on 42 reviews.

It seems that Weapons has not only lived up to the expectations set by Cregger’s 2022 movie Barbarian, which has a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, but also surpassed them.
