The Batman 2: Matt Reeves’ Movie Gets Optimistic Production Update
The Batman 2 has a production start date.
Fans have been anxiously awaiting the sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman ever since the first movie was released in United States theaters in 2022. Starring Robert Pattinson as the titular Dark Knight, the film was a massive hit and grossed around $772.3 million at the global box office. It also kicked off Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga, which continued in 2024’s The Penguin with Colin Farrell.
It’s been known that The Batman 2 is in the works for a while, now; however, it wasn’t until just recently that Reeves and Mattson Tomlin turned in their script for the movie. Plot details remain heavily under wraps at this point in time.
What is the update on The Batman 2?
According to ProductionList.com, via ComicBookMovie, The Batman 2 — also known as The Batman Part II or The Batman Part 2 — will begin production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in London, United Kingdom, on January 1, 2026.
“Pre‑production is ramping up in London, the posting on ProductionList.com reads. “Production leads are organizing departments and hiring for production design, art direction, stunt coordination, costume, makeup, grip, lighting, camera, VFX, and post-production planning. Leavesden offers access to high-end soundstages and set-building facilities—ideal for Gotham’s gritty transformation and sweeping practical environments.
“The sequel explores Gotham’s slow recovery from the devastating flood caused by the Riddler in the previous film, tackling themes of societal division, power dynamics, and moral ambiguity. Reeves has described Batman’s new journey as operating in a more complex and ‘greyer’ world — raising the stakes for character-driven tension and visual storytelling.”
Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman in the movie, while the website lists the returning cast as Farrell, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon. It also says Barry Keoghan is “expected” to return as the Joker, though this has not been confirmed by Warner Bros. Pictures as of yet.
The Batman 2 arrives on October 1, 2027.
