John Cena Says Superman DCU Cameo Happened at ‘The Final Hour’

Peacemaker star John Cena is opening up about his brief cameo in James Gunn’s Superman movie.

Superman is now playing in United States theaters. Written and directed by Gunn, the DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures movie stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and more.

Cena’s Christopher Smith/Peacemaker also makes a brief cameo in the movie when he’s seen appearing on a news show mocking Superman. Peacemaker will soon return for its second season, which will be part of the DCU and premieres on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.

What did John Cena say about Peacemaker’s Superman cameo?

In a new video shared on Peacemaker’s Twitter account, Cena discussed what his experience was like on the set of Superman and how the cameo came to be.

“I was called in at the final hour, as we were preparing for Peacemaker Season 2,” he said. “I did the costume fittings for the new Peacemaker Season 2 wardrobe — hint, hint, wink, wink — and they were filming Superman at the time. James asked me if I wanted to be involved, and my answer was heck yes. So I got to go on a talk show and talk some smack about Superman.

“The good thing about James Gunn writing and directing Superman is that he runs DC, too. So there is a short list of folks who dial my phone and I’ll immediately pick up for them and say, ‘How can I be of service?’ And he is one.”

When asked why Superman is so iconic, Cena answered, “I think everything from the branding to the idea of a true virtuous superhero — you have to start the story of good and evil somewhere, and I think Superman is building block one of that.”
