Josh Brolin Survival Thriller Movie Whalefall Gets Release Date

Disney has announced the release date for 20th Century Studios’ upcoming film adaptation of Whalefall, based on Daniel Kraus’ 2023 novel of the same name.

Described as The Martian meets 127 Hours, the movie follows the story of a scuba driver who gets swallowed by a sperm whale, after he was trying to search for the remains of his father. The movie will be led by Josh Brolin (Weapons), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), Elisabeth Shue (Back to the Future movies), John Ortiz (Fast & Furious), Jane Levy (Evil Dead), and Emily Rudd (One Piece).

When is the Whalefall release date?

Whalefall is scheduled to make its debut in theaters on October 26, 2026. At the moment, the movie has no direct competition at the box office on the day of its release. However, it will also be debuting in the same month as high profile movies like Anne Hathaway’s Verity movie, Alejandro Iñárritu’s Tom Cruise-led untitled comedy movie, M. Night Shyamalan’s supernatural thriller Remain, and the animated movie The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.

Whalefall is directed by Brian Duffield from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kraus. Duffield is best known for his directorial work on 2020’s dark comedy Spontaneous and 2023’s sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You. He also wrote the screenplays for 2020’s Love and Monsters and 2020’s Underwater.

The upcoming movie is produced by Duffield, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, and Allan Mandelbaum, with Richard Abate, Douglas C. Merrifield, and Will Rowbotham serving as executive producers. The creative also includes cinematographer Aaron Morton, editor Pietro Scalia, and composer Joseph Trapanese.
