Fantastic Four: Deadpool Creator Slams ‘Dull & Boring’ MCU Movie
Rob Liefeld is not a fan of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is now playing in United States theaters. Directed by Matt Shakman, the MCU movie stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch.
What did Rob Liefeld say about The Fantastic Four: First Steps?
Liefeld, who is best known for creating the Deadpool character alongside Fabian Nicieza, posted a picture of a mostly empty theater on Twitter with the caption, “This was the 5pm Fantastic Four screening at my IMAX. I can tell you why there is very little repeat biz on this film. It’s impossibly dull & boring.”
He wrote in another post, “Vanessa Kirby carries the entire film and is tasked with some ridiculous lifts. She’s the VIP. Also, the Franklin baby is the cutest kid ever on screen. Adorable.”
Liefeld has been critical of Marvel Studios before. He’s specifically called out Kevin Feige multiple times, saying that he “does not treat comic book creators well” and that he needs to get “off the mound.” A February 2025 article from The Hollywood Reporter further details his issues with Marvel and why he ultimately decided to sever ties with the company.
The critical response to The Fantastic Four: First Steps has been generally positive, as the movie currently holds an 86 percent Rotten Tomatoes score with 351 reviews; although, that’s not to say that everyone out there apart from Liefeld is a fan.
As for the film’s box office, First Steps has so far grossed approximately $241.3 million globally. According to Variety, the film is currently tracking to make around $45 million to $52 million in its second weekend of release, which will be a 55 percent to 60 percent decline.
