The Naked Gun Reviews Result in Comedy Series’ Best Rotten Tomatoes Score
The Naked Gun reviews are beginning to come in for the new entry in the long-running comedy series, and has received nothing but praise so far.
What are The Naked Gun reviews saying?
Over on Rotten Tomatoes, The Naked Gun currently sports a 93% rating amongst 85 reviews. This not only shows how well-received the film is, but is also the highest mark for the entire series in its history on the review aggregating site. The previous high was held by the iconic 1988 entry starring Leslie Nielsen, which has an 88% score.
Reviews of the Liam Neeson-led entry in the series are mostly all extremely glowing. Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson praised the film as a “dumb, loopy delight, a return to the kind of comedy that was woefully taken for granted in its heyday and now barely exists at all.”
Empire Magazine’s John Nugent says the new movie has a “better chance of producing a belly laugh than any in recent memory,” while IndieWire’s David Ehrlich says the movie pulls off being a “hilarious new take on the old ZAZ masterpiece.”
The Naked Gun is directed and executive produced by Akiva Schaffer of The Lonely Island comedy group (Hot Rod), who has been attached to helm the reboot since 2022. Alongside Neeson, the cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, and Eddie Yu, with Danny Huston. Schaffer also co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. It is also produced by Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins for Fuzzy Door, with Daniel M. Stillman, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, and Andrew Lary executive producing.
The original 1988 movie served as a spin-off to 1982’s Police Squad! It featured Nielsen reprising his role as Detective Sergeant Frank Drebin. It went on to spawn two more sequels, including 1991’s The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear and 1994’s Naked Gun 33 1⁄3: The Final Insult.
