James Bond: Taron Egerton Has Surprising Response to 007 Rumors
The search for the next James Bond is underway, and one of the rumored choices to play 007 has already removed his name from consideration.
What was Taron Egerton’s response to James Bond rumors?
Taron Egerton broke out as an actor in Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Thanks to his charisma, looks, and physicality, Egerton thrived in the role of a cunning spy. The success of the Kingsman franchise has led many pundits and prognosticators to nominate Egerton as the next James Bond.
Egerton’s traits — mid-30s, Welsh, and experience as a leading man — make him an ideal candidate for 007. The only one who disagrees with this casting is Egerton himself.
While speaking with Collider, Egerton was asked if he would play Bond. An honest Egerton said he’s not interested in the iconic espionage character.
“No. And I don’t think I’m a good choice for it. I think I’m too messy for that,” Egerton said. “I think I’m not — I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure. But I think I wouldn’t be good at it, and I think there’s so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.”
Egerton, who is currently one of the stars of the Apple TV+ crime drama Smoke, joked that nobody has asked him to play Bond. He also mentioned how playing 007 would “consume” his life, something he’s not willing to do right now.
“It’s possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest,” Egerton said about playing Bond. “I do think it’s a big old undertaking. It kind of consumes your life, a role like that.”
Amazon MGM Studios is now in full creative control of the Bond franchise. Last month, the studio announced Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond film. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are attached to produce. Tanya Lapointe will serve as executive producer.
