Avatar 4 & 5: James Cameron Reveals If He’ll Direct More Sci-Fi Movies

With Avatar: Fire and Ash arriving later this year, James Cameron is already plotting the future for Avatar 4 and 5. If things go his way, the Oscar winner will stick around for the remainder of the franchise.

What did James Cameron say about Avatar 4 & 5?

While speaking with Empire, Cameron declared his intentions to direct the fourth and fifth installments in the Avatar franchise.

“I mean, there’s no reason not to,” Cameron said. “I’m healthy. I’m good to go.”

Cameron will turn 71 next month. If the writer-director directs the fifth and final Avatar movie, he will be 77. Cameron knows that these films require his full and undivided attention. If he can’t make the physical and mental commitment to helm more Avatar movies, he would consider stepping aside and having another director step in.

“I’m not going to rule it out,” Cameron added about potentially turning the franchise over to another filmmaker. “I mean, I’ve got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. You know what I mean? I might not be able to do that.”

Cameron cited his relationship with Robert Rodriguez on Alita: Battle Angel to show that he’s willing to let someone else direct his scripts. Until Cameron passes the torch to another director, he has every intention of helming Avatar 4 and 5.

Those films are still years away. Avatar 3, which just revealed its first trailer, hits theaters before the end of the year. The third Avatar movie will introduce two new groups of Na’vi: the Wind Traders and the Ash People. The aggressive Ash People are led by the Varang (Oona Chaplin), who will lead her clan into battle against Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the rest of their family.

Cameron directed Avatar 3 from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released by 20th Century Studios on December 19, 2025. Avatar 4 is scheduled for December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 is expected to arrive on December 19, 2031.
