Former Superman Star Slams James Gunn’s Creative Choices in New DCU Film
While James Gunn’s Superman seems to have pleased many fans of the titular character, former Superman actor Dean Cain seems to have several issues with the recently released film. Cain, who portrayed the Man of Steel throughout the run of the 1993 series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, has criticized a number of Gunn’s creative choices for the DCU film.
Dean Cain says James Gunn made Superman’s Earth parents ‘stupid rednecks’
In a recent interview with Variety, the 58-year-old actor highlighted several elements of the new Superman film that did not sit well with him. In particular, Cain expressed problems with Gunn’s creative vision regarding the titular superhero’s vulnerability during a fight as well as his adoptive parents on Earth, Jonathan and Martha Kent.
“James Gunn and his decision to make Ma and Pa Kent the stupid rednecks. That’s a choice. And Superman has to be saved, like, repeatedly? On a movie this size, every decision is a choice made carefully,” Dean Cain said in his recent review of the film.
He also mentioned his connection to Gunn’s DC Studios partner Peter Safran, stating, “And Peter Safran is a Princeton guy, too, a year ahead of me, but he’s never hired me.”
Dean Cain has already spoken against James Gunn’s comments about Superman being an immigrant. In an earlier interview, the actor voiced his displeasure with Gunn’s take on the character by noting, ” I think if you want to create a new character, go ahead and do that. But for me, Superman has always stood for ‘truth, justice, and the American way’ — and the American way is tremendously immigrant-friendly. But there are rules.”
Despite his mostly negative opinion about the first film entry in the DCU, Cain was able to resonate with some parts of the film. “Seeing Krypto in the trailer gave me goose bumps. He saves a squirrel. He saves a little girl. I respect that,” he explained.
