Fantastic Four Director Explains Why First Steps Doesn’t Continue Thunderbolts* Post-Credits Scene

Matt Shakman, the director of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, shed light on why his movie’s ending doesn’t align with the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts*. Notably, the mid and post-credits scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are often used to establish an overarching storyline that spans across the franchise. While the epilogues of Thunderbolts* and First Steps do help build up the narrative for the upcoming crossover feature, Avengers: Doomsday, the newer project doesn’t include anything that addresses what happens in the final moments of Thunderbolts*.

Matt Shakman wasn’t ‘familiar’ with Thunderbolts* post-credits scene when he wrote Fantastic Four

Shakman revealed in a new interview with Cinemablend that First Steps didn’t refer to the Thunderbolts* post-credits scene because he had no idea what it would be while penning the script for his movie. “No, no, no, because the Thunderbolts* end credit scene was also created, you know, relatively late in my process too, so that was not something that I was familiar with because it hadn’t been created at the time that I was working on my script, you know?” the filmmaker explained.

In Thunderbolts* post-credits scene, which takes place 14 months after the events of the climax, the eponymous group, who are now known as the New Avengers, and Bob discover an extra-dimensional spacecraft with a large “4” that has arrived in the solar system.

First Steps, which came out over two months after Thunderbolts*, doesn’t include any reference to that scene. It has two after-credits sequences. The mid-credits scene depicts Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm / Invisible Woman discovering her son Franklin interacting with a mysterious man in a green cloak. This man is holding a metal mask in his hand. It is heavily implied that this is Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom / Doctor Doom. The post-credits scene is a fun but unrelated clip of a cartoon show-within-the-movie featuring the titular heroes.

In the above-mentioned interview, Shakman reiterated his belief that the MCU is a “relay race” and he has passed the “baton” to the Russo Brothers, the directors of Doomsday.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is currently playing in theaters.
