Fan-Favorite The Suicide Squad Character Might Become DCU Canon
Superman director James Gunn has finally revealed if The Suicide Squad will be canon to the DC Universe. Despite its poor box office performance, the 2021 movie was still a hit among critics, with a current Tomatometer rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. This served as Gunn’s first DC movie before becoming the co-CEO of DC Studios.
The Suicide Squad was written and directed by Gunn. It centered around a group of supervillains tasked by Amanda Waller for a super secret mission. The star-studded ensemble cast featured Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, John Cena, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Alice Braga, Pete Davidson, Joaquín Cosio, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Jennifer Holland, Tinashe Kajese, Sylvester Stallone, Steve Agee, and Taika Waititi.
What did James Gunn say about The Suicide Squad’s DCU status?
Recently, Gunn launched a podcast dedicated to rewatching the first season of Peacemaker ahead of the show’s return on August 21. Besides sharing behind-the-scenes stories, the podcast also aims to clarify which parts from Season 1 will be canon to the DCU.
When asked on Threads if he would also do a rewatch podcast for The Suicide Squad in order to clarify which scenes of the movie were now canon to the DCU, the filmmaker confirmed that it is indeed possible.

Gunn also seemingly hinted that the characters featured in his 2021 movie might also appear in future projects after liking a comment about Idris Elba’s incredible performance as Bloodsport. He also confirmed that everything Peacemaker did in The Suicide Squad are also part of the DCU canon, including killing Rick Flag Jr.

Peacemaker Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
