MJF & The Gilmore Boys on Keeping Up With Adam Sandler & John Daly in Happy Gilmore 2
Happy Gilmore 2 stars Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Conor Sherry, Ethan Cutkosky, and Philip Fine Schneider spoke to ComingSoon about playing Adam Sandler’s sons in the Netflix comedy. The four actors spoke about their bond, working on Sandler’s set, and spending time with golfer John Daly. The comedy sequel is now streaming on Netflix.
“Happy Gilmore returns!” reads the film’s short but sweet logline.
Tyler Treese: Maxwell, you’re a very quick-witted guy, as we see in AEW all the time.
Maxwell Jacob Friedman: I try.
I imagine it was very refreshing having someone who can keep up with you, like Adam Sandler. What stood out about working with him and getting to see his creative mind up close?
MJF: What a beautiful question. Honestly, it meant everything to me because in my realm of wrestling… This isn’t me just burying all the other wrestling talent, it’s just me being honest, they can’t keep up with me at all. So I got to be in a room with people who are all incredible actors, and I got to just ad-lib and just boom, boom, boom, boom. We all just get to really vamp and it was such a sick experience.
The cool thing is with Adam and with Kyle, like they would really let us, after a couple takes, they’d be like, “Have fun with it,” and boy did we. Like every single scene, and it was really fun. I can’t say enough nice things. So yes, in that aspect, it was definitely different than the world of professional wrestling because in the world of professional wrestling, with love and respect, everybody sucks in comparison.
Conor, Adam Sandler movies are quite literally family affairs. We see his lovely wife and two of his daughters in the film, including one who plays your sister. Hw did that vibe on set compare to other films you’ve done? I think that feeling of just a fun time really bleeds through into the film.
Conor Sherry: Yeah, I mean, I think it was everything. Adam’s sets are amazing because it’s not only his immediate family, but it’s his film family that’s there too. The same producers, I mean, the whole crew, everyone knows each other. So getting plugged into that was awesome. I also think I’ve been fortunate. I’m fairly new on the scene of like Hollywood and stuff, but I’ve been on some really great sets and like had some very memorable, intimate shoots. This was no different, which was cool, considering it was a big movie, for it to still feel as intimate as an indie film, which was awesome. But yeah, it was a blast.
Ethan, Happy Gilmore is such a legendary film. I watched it just two nights ago and laughed as many times as I did when I was a kid growing up. What does it mean for you to not just be carrying on its legacy but adding to it? Because this really brings a new depth to Happy and adds so much.
Ethan Cutowsky: I think we didn’t really… I mean, obviously, we knew going into it, but I think the scale and the leverage started to really feel as we got close to this premiere this week, and we were all kind of saying like, “You woke up, and oh, we’re here at the premiere. It’s happening.” There is this kind of weight of like, not like of carrying on a legacy, but you’re like, “Oh, we are a part of this now. This is like a very unique thing to be a part of.” It’s crazy surreal, but also an honor that we all get to be together and have this close bond now.
Philip, one of my favorite aspects of the film was John Daly living in your guys’ garage. He is so funny. It’s such a delight. How was it getting to film with him?
Philip Fine Schneider: Yeah, he is. Just watching the movie last night, he’s wonderful. He’s a great actor. He was amazing on set to hang out with, always brought the energy, had a wonderful little crew. His lovely wife was always around, and we had a blast. I mean, he was our uncle, both on and off camera. It was sweet to hang out with him in that little garage and in our little house for really almost a month. But, yeah, he was an awesome guy. Super, super, super, super fun to hang out with him, and also had this incredible golf career. I still watch him when he shows up on golf YouTube, too.
Thanks to Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Conor Sherry, Ethan Cutkosky, and Philip Fine Schneider for taking the time to talk about Happy Gilmore 2.
