Adored Stephen King Book Gets Movie by Strange Darling Director

The entertainment world can’t get enough of Stephen King. Earlier this year, The Monkey hit theaters and became a box office hit, earning a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. Strange Darling director, JT Mollner, will adapt another beloved work of King’s.

This year alone, Stephen King adaptations are making their way to film and television. In theaters, Hunger Games franchise director, Francis Lawrence, is directing The Long Walk, where teenagers compete in a life-or-death marathon. The Running Man will also receive its second adaptation, starring Glen Powell, who must thwart murderous Hunters for prize money.

Stephen King is also making his way to television. HBO‘s It: Welcome to Derry series premieres in October, which recalls the events leading up to the first movie. In streaming, The Institute is on MGM+ about dark secrets unfolding at a facility for gifted children. A miniseries of Carrie, previously adapted twice, is in the works and will stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Which Stephen King book is next to be adapted by JT Mollner?

According to Lionsgate‘s press release, JT Mollner will be adapting Stephen King’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. He’s had his hand with Stephen King’s works before by adapting the screenplay for The Long Walk.

Most notably, JT Mollner wrote and directed 2024’s indie psychological thriller Strange Darling. The indie psychological thriller about a one-night stand turning into a cat-and-mouse game currently has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Long Walk and Strange Darling producer, Roy Lee, will be re-teaming with JT Mollner for the upcoming horror film. Lee’s had his share of producing many Stephen King adaptations like the It movies, Doctor Sleep, and Salem’s Lot.

Stephen King’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is about a nine-year-old Trisha, who struggles to stay alive all alone in the woods. Her only salvation is hearing through her Walkman baseball games of pitcher Tom Gordon, which lead to hallucinations.

In the press release, Lionsgate’s president, Erin Westerman, explained why JT Mollner fits well as director for the next Stephen King adaptation:

“JT is a filmmaker we believe has a bright future,” says Westerman. “Throughout his work, he creates characters, and especially young characters, that are so compelling, heartbreaking, and emotional that they pop off the screen— and of course, that’s what Stephen King does on the page as well. The story of survival and perseverance in The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is timeless—we’ve loved this tale for a long time and JT is the perfect choice to adapt and direct this King fan favorite.”

Until the news comes out on The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon’s release date, you can watch The Long Walk in theaters on September 12th.
