Beloved Tom Hanks Movie Gets IMAX Rerelease for 30th Anniversary
In honor of its 30th anniversary, Apollo 13 returns to theaters this fall. The beloved Tom Hanks movie will be presented in IMAX for the first time since its 2002 remastered release, which was the first Hollywood movie to be digitally remastered via IMAX DMR technology.

Apollo 13 will be rereleased exclusively in IMAX on September 19, 2025.
Apollo 13 stars Hanks as Commander Lovell, the astronaut chosen to lead a mission into outer space. Lovell and his fellow astronauts, Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) and Fred Haise (Bill Paxton), became the United States’ fifth crewed mission to the Moon. The trio was supposed to become the third group to land on the moon.
Three days into the mission, an electrical short causes an explosion on the ship. With their oxygen and power supplies dwindling, the astronauts must abandon the moon-landing mission. Instead, Apollo 13 becomes a life-or-death situation and a fight to make it home. With the astronauts in peril, NASA’s flight controllers and scientists work around the clock to keep their boys alive.

Apollo 13’s cast includes Gary Sinise as prime Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly, Ed Harris as Flight Director Gene Kranz, and Kathleen Quinlan as Marilyn Gerlach Lovell.
Ron Howard directed Apollo 13 from a screenplay by William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert. Howard’s frequent collaborator and business partner, Brian Grazer, produced the film.
Universal Pictures released Apollo 13 on June 30, 1995. The film became a financial smash, grossing over $355 million on an estimated budget of $52 million.
Apollo 13 received significant critical acclaim, leading to nine Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Harris), and Best Supporting Actress (Quinlan). Apollo 13 won the Oscars for Best Sound and Best Film Editing.
