Fantastic Four’s Ralph Ineson Explains Galactus’ True Motivations as Villain

Ralph Ineson, who plays the iconic cosmic entity Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, recently reflected on whether his character is truly evil. The new film isn’t Ineson’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he previously played a nameless Ravager pilot in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Here’s what he said about his latest role.

Ralph Ineson explains why Galactus is seen as a villain in The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Ineson stated that Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps is not “evil” or “malevolent.” The versatile actor noted that even ordinary human characters are not the “bad guy” in their own stories, and that they have certain motivations behind their actions. He added, “I don’t think I’ve ever played a character that recognizes he is consciously evil or a mustache-twirling villain.”

According to Ineson, Galactus represents a “different concept” because “there’s no evil intent to what he does.” He added that Galactus “hungers.”

“He has to consume planets to stay alive, and that’s maintained a balance in the universe for 14 billion years,” Ineson explained.

Ineson seems to believe that Galactus “eating a planet” is not necessarily malicious. “So the humans or whatever living beings are on the planet are insignificant to him, but eating a planet is not a malevolent act,” Ineson elaborated. “It’s just something he does, and it’s something that’s essential to him in order to satiate his hunger.”

While the 55-year-old actor accepted that Galactus is “obviously a villain of sorts” in the movie, he doesn’t regard him as evil. He continued, “If you are living on a planet that he’s about to devour, that makes him more than a little inconvenient, but I don’t think that necessarily makes him evil.”

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created Galactus for Marvel Comics. The cosmic entity made his comic-book debut in Fantastic Four #48 in 1966. Before First Steps, 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer featured a version of Galactus. However, that iteration doesn’t speak and was shown as a cosmic cloud.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps premieres in theaters this Friday.
