James Gunn Explains Why Supergirl Didn’t Tell Superman The Truth About Jor-El’s Message
James Gunn recently shared why Supergirl didn’t tell the truth about Kal-El’s parents’ message to him in Superman. Released in theaters across the globe on July 11, 2-25, the film featured a cameo appearance from Milly Alcock as Kara, AKA Supergirl, thus setting up her upcoming movie in the DCU. Superman, directed by Gunn, is doing exceptionally well at the box office with its current collection above $400 million.
Here’s why Supergirl didn’t tell Superman about his parents in James Gunn’s film
Following the bumper opening of Superman at the box office, its director is now answering certain plot-related questions for fans.
During a chat with Rolling Stone, James Gunn was asked about why Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El, AKA Supergirl, didn’t tell her cousin Superman about the reality of his parents’ message. In most comics, Supergirl is older than Superman. However, in the rebooted DCU, Gunn stated that this is reversed.
The DC Studios co-CEO explained why Kara didn’t reveal Jor-El’s true motives to Superman. He said, “You’re assuming that everybody on Krypton is the same! And how would she know? She’s younger than him, so she wouldn’t know. She wouldn’t know anything about his parents.”
James Gunn was further asked if Kara had a bigger cameo in the movie before the final cut was released. He conveyed, “Yeah, it was always that. When I took this job, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was, like, number one for me of the things I knew I wanted to do. Ana Nogueira just killed the script right away, and saw what I saw in how the comic could be adapted to film, where [Supergirl is] even rougher in the film than she is in the comic, I think.”
Currently, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is under development and is expected to be out in theaters on June 26, 2026.
