Fantastic Four & Thunderbolts* Post-Credits Scenes Have 1 Major Thing in Common

Matt Shakman, the director of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, has revealed who directed the post-credits scene of the highly anticipated MCU feature. The scenes play an important role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as they tease future projects in the franchise.

Matt Shakman confirms Joe and Anthony Russo directed Fantastic Four: First Steps post-credits scene

Matt Shakman revealed in a new interview with ComicBook that he didn’t direct the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. As with Thunderbolts*, the First Steps post-credits scene was filmed by Joe and Anthony Russo during the production of Avengers: Doomsday. The filmmaker also made it clear that he didn’t have any issue with the Russo Brothers handling the characters from his movie after him.

“Not at all, especially when I”m handing them off to the Russo brothers who are amazing at what they do and they’re lovely, generous people,” Shakman said. He revealed that the Russos were “very involved” in the production of First Steps.

The director shared, “They wanted to visit our sets and watch scenes as they were coming together and get to know these characters so they could treat them well, do right by them in the next movie. They’re really good protectors of these characters as well.”

Shakman compared helming Marvel movies to a “relay race.” He elaborated, “You pass the baton, you run as hard and fast as you can with it for that section of the race that belongs to you, and then you pass that baton. I passed it on to Joe and Anthony, and they’re off and running, and that’s great.”

Production for Doomsday began in April 2025. The Russos are directing that movie along with its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. Several members of the First Day cast will appear in Doomsday, including actors portraying the four superheroes of the eponymous collective.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in US theaters on July 25, 2025.
