Superman Boosts Man of Steel Viewership by 218%

A new report confirms that James Gunn’s Superman is boosting Man of Steel‘s viewership along with several other DC titles on Max. Following the film’s theatrical debut, multiple Superman-related movies and DC series have seen major spikes in engagement, signaling renewed interest in the broader DC Universe.

James Gunn’s Superman leads to increased viewership for Man of Steel

Man of Steel emerged as the most-watched Superman title on HBO Max last week, with a 218% viewership boost, according to Deadline. Christopher Reeve’s 1978 debut as Superman saw the highest week-over-week spike at 332%, while Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story recorded a 1,206% increase.

DC series have also benefitted. Peacemaker Season 1 experienced a 91% viewership jump, aligning with the anticipation for Season 2, set to release in August 2025. The increased engagement across titles follows the box office success of Superman, which opened to $220 million globally as of Monday.

Gunn’s version of the character reportedly takes a “lighter” tone. He told Deadline that the film returns to “the color and the joy” of Superman’s origins. Gunn began directing Superman after taking over DC Studios with Peter Safran in 2022. The film marks the launch of the new DCU’s ‘Gods and Monsters’ phase.

Superman stars David Corenswet in the lead role. The ensemble cast features Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. María Gabriela de Faría plays The Engineer. Other cast members include Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced, and Nathan Fillion.

These viewership trends show rising interest in DC content on HBO Max after Superman hit theaters. HBO Max hasn’t released exact viewing numbers. However, the week-over-week increases suggest a strong streaming response linked to the film’s debut.

James Gunn’s Superman is now playing in theaters, while Man of Steel is available for streaming on HBO Max.
