Robert Pattinson’s Batman Would Be an Awful DCU Fit After Superman
James Gunn’s Superman movie is delightful and fun, but it also proves that the DCU does not need to crossover with Matt Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga.
Following the release of Superman, fans are now wondering what the future of the DCU looks like. We know that Peacemaker Season 2, Supergirl, and Lanterns are all coming in the next year or so, but what about beyond that? There are more plans, for sure, but when does Batman come into play?
Many have wondered if Robert Pattinson’s version of Bruce Wayne will make his way into the DCU, despite the fact that Gunn has said multiple times that this probably won’t happen. Maybe he’s telling the truth. Maybe there are secret plans we don’t know about, yet. But Superman makes a really convincing argument as to why these two universes should remain separate from one another.
Robert Pattinson’s Batman doesn’t fit in Superman’s DCU
Let’s state a few obvious facts, here, first: Reeves’ The Batman is a dark movie where Bruce explores the complicated legacy of his family while also dealing with a murderous psychopath terrorizing the streets of Gotham. Superman has some deeper themes about humanity and international conflict that can be dived into; however, it’s still a pretty light-hearted romp where we get to see monkeys turned into keyboard warriors and a dog who cares more about treats than about saving the world.
The tone of these two movies is very different. That’s not inherently a bad thing; Gunn recently told IGN that he wants every DCU project to have “its own stamp on it,” meaning that Clayface will probably be a darker story than Superman is.
I think it’s important to remember what we’re supposedly building towards here, though. While plans for a Justice League project or World’s Finest movie haven’t been confirmed, that’s what fans want to see and, at one point or another, likely where we’re headed. Meaning, those two characters need to have some kind of report with one another and, just judging what we’ve seen from Pattinson and David Corenswet right now, I can’t see that feeling all too natural without some retconning going on.
Will Gunn move away from modern Batman’s dark tone?
The world that Pattinson’s Batman inhabits is vastly different than Superman’s. Gotham and Metropolis are two different cities, yes, but Superman joins an international conflict in Gunn’s movie. If he heard about Colin Farrell’s Penguin, for example, don’t we think that would cause a reaction within the Man of Steel?
Reeves can do whatever he wants with The Batman Epic Crime Saga, and Gunn can still introduce a Caped Crusader who banters a little bit more. This would give the DCU an in to tell some more fantastic Batman stories featuring characters like Killer Croc or Man-Bat.
If anything, Gunn’s Superman proves that DCU character introductions don’t have to be grand and time-consuming. Kal-El has already existed in this world for three years by the time Superman starts. The Green Lanterns and Justice Gang are already a thing. If Batman shows up without a retelling of who he is or why he’s dressed the way he is, nobody’s going to mind.
There’s enough room for both of these franchises to exist, and given that Superman feels so tonally different than The Batman, it’s a better idea to keep them apart from one another. Who knows! There could be a Justice League project where they cross into other DC universes and Pattinson makes a cameo! I’m all for that; let’s just let Gunn do his world-building and Reeves do his for the time being.
