Superman’s James Gunn Found David Corenswet While Watching This Movie
James Gunn revealed how he discovered his Superman actor, David Corenswet, during a new guest spot appearance. Gunn’s Superman film serves as the inaugural cinematic entry in the fledgling DC Universe. The casting of the iconic role of Superman / Clark Kent was always going to be critically important for the franchise.
James Gunn discovered David Corenswet when he saw the actor in Pearl
Gunn appeared on JM Video Club (via Konbini) and candidly spoke about the movies that inspired him as a filmmaker during a 30-minute guest spot. He picked up the 2022 horror feature Pearl and disclosed that he saw Corenswet’s performance in the movie as the Projectionist and thought that the actor could be Superman.
“I actually was watching this movie [Pearl], which is great. It’s a great movie…And I saw a character whose name is just the Projectionist in the movie, and I’m like, ‘That guy looks like he could possibly be Superman,’” Gunn recalled, adding, “I looked up his name on IMDb and said, ‘Can you bring this guy in?’”
Gunn added that Corenswet and other actors subsequently came in for Superman casting. In that initial stage, Gunn apparently had a frontrunner in mind, but their audition tape “wasn’t very good,” so he moved on. He then saw Corenswet’s tape, and thought he was “amazing” and “funny.”
Notably, Pearl serves as a prequel to X (2022) and is the second entry in the X film series. Ti West directed the feature from a script he penned with Mia Goth, who also stars in the movie as the eponymous Pearl.
Before Superman, Corenswet’s filmography included 2018’s Affairs of State, 2022’s Look Both Ways, Netflix’s The Politician, and the Netflix miniseries Hollywood. It was announced in June 2023 that the actor has been cast as Superman in Gunn’s movie. Corenswet’s performance as Superman has received widespread acclaim, with SuperHeroHype’s Matt Morrison writing that the actor’s iteration might be “the best cinematic” version of the character.
