A new report signals a major box office test for DC Studios as Superman is set to be released globally this weekend. James Gunn is the director the film, and strong early indicators suggest it will set the tone for the franchise’s future.
Here’s how much Superman’s worldwide box office could start with
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s first DC Studios film under “Gods and Monsters,” Superman, is reportedly set to earn at least $200 million globally during its opening weekend.
The film is launching on 60,000 screens worldwide, split evenly between domestic and international markets. Domestic estimates suggest Superman will earn between $115 million and $130 million in its U.S./Canada debut.
Presales for Superman in the U.S. have reached $20 million, ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($118.4 million opening) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($106.1 million) (via Deadline).
The film will screen in 4,000 domestic locations by Friday, including all major premium formats. Early screenings include sold-out Amazon Prime member events and Thursday previews at 3,400 theaters.
The global release began Wednesday in France, Italy, and Korea, with additional key territories, including the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Australia, China, and Japan, opening by Friday.
Early tracking indicates strong interest in the UK, Brazil, and Mexico. China presales lead for Thursday and Friday shows. Promotional events in Rio and London included a large Superman sculpture at The Shard.
Critical reception has also supported momentum. The film holds an 86% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with several critics praising its tone, direction, and performances by the cast, among other things.
Superman follows a franchise legacy that includes the 1978 Richard Donner film and Snyder’s 2013 Man of Steel ($670.1M global). Warner Bros. expects this installment to revitalize the brand and establish the tone of its new cinematic universe.
