Superman Reviews Show James Gunn Isn’t Making Zack Snyder’s Mistakes
The first Superman reviews are beginning to roll in, and the first entry in the DC Universe is earning critical praise.
Speculation on how James Gunn’s first official entry into the movie side of the DCU would be received ran rampant for weeks on social media. With reviews now out, it seems as if Gunn’s approach to this version of Superman is what’s landing the most with those who have seen the movie.
Superman reviews are praising James Gunn’s lighthearted take on the Man of Steel
Most of the positive critical takes on Superman have heaped praise on Gunn’s Superman for its most whimsical, silly, and lighthearted tone. Specifically, the “comic book feel” of the movie is something that many have touched on. With the film being such a stark departure from the past few live-action Superman iterations we’ve seen, it shows that Gunn and those behind the film made the right decision in deviating away from what many viewed as the more detrimental aspects of the past DC film universe.
Gunn was right to ditch DC’s overserious tone
One of the larger complaints against Zack Snyder’s overarching DCEU is that the films all took on significantly serious tones. Between Batman’s more gruff take (inspired by Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns) and the overall color and look of the films, Snyder’s DCEU was not the massive hit WB wanted it to be. Namely, Snyder’s Superman character was often seen as too much of a serious and overbearing figure, with none of the Superman comics’ whimsy and hopefulness shining through.
James Gunn’s Superman, on the other hand, seems to have gone to the complete opposite end of the “serious” side. At least judging by reviews for the project, the movie seems to have fully embraced Superman’s more kindhearted, gentle, and fun-loving nature. Due to how poorly the DCEU ended (thanks in part to several factors), it was smart for Gunn and new DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran to lean into the opposite tones for their new world.
While it remains to be seen if every movie will embrace the tones Superman does, it seems as if Gunn is at least on the right track as it begins its journey into a full-fledged universe.
