Superman Reviews Give It Best Rotten Tomatoes Score Since Christopher Reeve Movies

The first Superman reviews are beginning to roll in, and the first entry in the DC Universe is earning critical praise.

What are the Superman reviews saying?

As of this writing, Superman currently holds an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The score is not only significantly better than any of the Superman DCEU entries, but also is the highest rating for a live-action Superman film since 1980’s Superman II.

With a certified “fresh” rating on the site, most critics praised James Gunn’s upcoming film. Variety’s Owen Gleibermann was a big fan of the movie, saying that James Gunn “constructs an intricate game of a superhero saga that’s arresting and touching, and occasionally exhausting, in equal measure. Audiences should flock to it.”

Likewise, TheWrap’s William Bibbiani said Gunn “succeeded” in making “a great Superman movie, one that embraces the wonder of the character as an action hero and a moral paragon, which derives its drama from how people react to his faith in us.”

Our Jonathan Sim was also a fan, calling the movie “an epic, action-packed start” for the DC Universe’s film franchise. AV Club’s Jarrod Jones also praised the film’s “simple, potent message: You don’t need X-ray vision to see people as people.”

“Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures,” the official synopsis reads. “In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”

Led by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, Superman also stars Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

Superman is set to premiere in theaters on July 11, 2025.
