The Odyssey Budget Confirmed as Christopher Nolan’s Most Expensive Movie
The budget for Christopher Nolan’s epic drama, The Odyssey, has finally been revealed ahead of its highly anticipated theatrical debut on July 17, 2026. This comes after the movie’s first look footage was just recently released by Universal Pictures. However, the trailer is not yet available online and can only be viewed in theaters through the screenings of Jurassic World Rebirth.
Described as a mythic action epic, the film is written and directed by Nolan based on the Greek poet Homer’s classic poem of the same name. This project marks the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s latest collaboration with Universal Pictures following the commercial and critical success of Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer biopic. The film is produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas.
What is The Odyssey budget?
According to THR, Universal Pictures has granted a $250 million budget to The Odyssey, making it Nolan’s most expensive film ever. Following the critical and commercial success of Oppenheimer, the studio has doubled down on its support for the acclaimed filmmaker’s vision. This is in line with the previous report by Puck’s Matthew Belloni, who was the first to call The Odyssey Nolan’s biggest movie last January.
The movie will be led by Matt Damon, who has been enlisted for the leading role of Greek hero Odysseus. In Homer’s original story, the character is introduced as the “king of Ithaca, who heads back home after the Trojan War. Presumed dead, Odysseus’ wife Penelope and son Telemachus contend with various suitors who compete for Penelope’s hand in Odysseus’ absence.”
The star-studded ensemble cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton, Will Yun Lee, and more. At the moment, Nolan and the cast are still filming across Europe, including Italy, Greece, Scotland, and the UK.
