The Odyssey Teaser Trailer Excites Fans In a Way Only Christopher Nolan Can
The teaser trailer to The Odyssey may have only leaked online, but it’s already got film fans buzzing in a way that only Christopher Nolan is capable of.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey releases in United States theaters next summer. While the teaser trailer hasn’t been officially released online at this time, it has started playing in front of Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World Rebirth. This led to a low-quality version of the teaser trailer being leaked.
The teaser opens with some shots of a beach and the ocean while voice-over narration, per The Hollywood Reporter, states, “Darkness. Zeus’ law smashed to pieces. I’m without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then, somehow, he won it.”
It then shows Tom Holland’s Telemachus character asking about the whereabouts of his father, Odysseus, played by Matt Damon. Jon Bernthal doesn’t give Holland a straightforward answer; rather, he says, “Who has a story about Odysseus? You? You have a story? Some say he’s rich. Some say he’s poor. Some said he perished. Some said he’s imprisoned.”
The end of the teaser then sees someone lying on a piece of driftwood in the middle of the ocean. This is presumably Damon’s character, though that hasn’t been confirmed at this time.
Why fans are buzzing about The Odyssey teaser trailer
The teaser trailer for the Odyssey doesn’t show too much footage, yet it has film fans excitedly chatting in anticipation of Nolan’s new epic.
Nolan is a filmmaker who loves to shroud his project in secrecy — just look at all the reports of what his next movie was going to be about before it was announced to be The Odyssey. He’s also a director who delivers nearly every time he’s working on something. Everyone might have their favorite Nolan movie, and a few tend to populate the bottom of the list when ranking his work, but you’d be hard-pressed to find one that’s universally considered “bad.”
The fact that he may just be entering the prime of his career after winning all kinds of Oscars for Oppenheimer doesn’t hurt, either. Plus, we’re seeing Nolan do something he’s never really done before with The Odyssey — he’s dabbled in sci-fi and superheroes, but a true Greek myth? That’s new territory.
In the past, short teaser trailers for Nolan’s movies have often been released about a year before the movie actually comes out. Dunkirk did this, Oppenheimer did this, etc. They’re a great way of getting people excited; we know there’s still a bit of a wait, but we also know that the next year is going to be full of all kinds of excitement and surprises.
With The Odyssey continuing this trend — and since we’re merely only hinting at Damon’s pivotal role in the film rather than showing us any of it at this time — it truly is a great day to be a Christopher Nolan fan.
