Jurassic World Rebirth Gets Rotten Reviews, Still Top 3 in Series

Jurassic World Rebirth reviews are in, and the latest entry in the legendary dinosaur franchise has scored the third-highest mark in the series despite its mostly negative reactions.

What are the Jurassic World Rebirth reviews saying?

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Jurassic World Rebirth debuted with a 57% on the review aggregating site. While the number for the film paints a “rotten” picture, the 58% score is actually the third-highest in the franchise’s history, behind only the original 1993 film (91%) and 2015’s Jurassic World (72%).

The Daily Beast’s Nick Schager was critical of the film, calling it a “handsome clone that serves no purpose except to line its creators’ pockets.” Likewise, Slant’s Derek Smith said the film has a “grating meta-ness” to it, while Roger Ebert’s Christy Lemire said the film can be fun, but “takes an awful lot of slogging through” to get there.

Despite the negative scores, the film didn’t receive all bad marks. In our review, Jonathan Sim said despite a thin story and character group, he still did “have some fun” with the movie, praising its “strong visual aesthetic” and “jaw-dropping spectacle.” Consequence’s Liz Shannon Miller also praised the film, calling it “the second-best Jurassic movie ever made,” even if that bar is low.

Jurassic World Rebirth is directed by Gareth Edwards from a screenplay written by David Koepp, based on the characters created by Michael Crichton. The cast will be led by Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson, Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey, and Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight). Joining them are Rupert Friend (Homeland), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty), Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs. Lopez), Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool).

“Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
