Charlize Theron revealed during a red carpet interview with Variety that she had not joined filming for The Odyssey but would leave to start soon. When asked about her experience on the set of Nolan’s next movie, Theron clarified that she had not joined the production yet. She later added, “I leave in a couple of weeks.”

The interviewer then asked how Theron would prepare to portray the goddess of sorcery on the big screen, referring to the character Circe. Theron responded, “I don’t know. I am just gonna talk to Chris [Nolan] about it, and we will see where it goes. It’s super intimidating. I am the last one to show up [on the set]. So, I will be like the new kid on the block. And everybody will know what they are doing, and not me.”

Theron was then asked when the last time she read The Odyssey, the epic poem attributed to Homer. The actor replied, “Oh! Really? A long time ago.”

In Greek mythology, Circe is a powerful entity, often regarded as a goddess or a nymph. She has appeared in earlier traditions, though she is widely known from The Odyssey. The hero of the epic poem, Odysseus, encounters Circe while trying to return home to the island of Ithaca from the Trojan War. After she changes some of his soldiers into swine, Odysseus receives divine advice on how to free them.

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey went into production in February 2025. Nolan is developing the movie from a screenplay he wrote based on the ancient poem. The star-studded cast also includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Zendaya, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, and Benny Safdie.

The Odyssey is scheduled to debut in theaters on July 17, 2026.
