Harry Potter: Michael Cera Explains Why He Didn’t Want to Star in Spin-off Movie
Michael Cera has an explanation as to why he turned down starring in the Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts spin-off movies.
Following the eight films in the main Harry Potter film series, Warner Bros. Pictures released three Fantastic Beasts spin-off films: 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and 2022’s Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
The cast of the movies includes Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore, and more.
What did Michael Cera say about turning down a Fantastic Beasts role?
Appearing on the Louis Theroux Podcast, via IndieWire, Cera revealed that he was being considered for a role in Fantastic Beasts; however, he decided to turn it down.
“I don’t even know if I was offered, I think I just declined to engage with it because I think it would be probably a six-year commitment or something. But also, I did sort of make a conscientious choice to limit my exposure a little bit, or just try and be a little more in control of it,” he explained. “And I felt like doing, especially little kids’ movies, I had a big fear of doing things that I would get too famous.
“…I think I’ve outgrown that particular feeling, but I think that’s what that was at that time. But if a franchise came along now and seemed interesting, I don’t think on the grounds of it being a franchise I would storm out of the office or anything.”
All three Fantastic Beasts movies are currently available to stream on Max, while HBO is also in the process of making a new Harry Potter television show. Cera, meanwhile, now stars in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, which is currently playing in United States theaters.
