Highlander: Oscar-Winning Actor Joins Cast of Reboot Movie
The upcoming Highlander reboot has added Russell Crowe to the cast.
Chad Stahelski, who is best known for his work on the John Wick franchise, is currently working on a reboot of 1986’s Highlander, which starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod. Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill will lead the new film.
According to Collider, Crowe has also now been cast in a “key role” in the Highlander reboot, though further details about who he is playing remain under wraps at this time.
Crowe won the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance as Maximus in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, which was released in 2000. He was nominated two other times for the same award for 1999’s The Insider and 2001’s A Beautiful Mind. He, too, starred in Man of Steel, as he was cast as Superman’s Kryptonian father Jor-El in that film.
Crowe’s filmography also includes 1997’s L.A. Confidential, 2003’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, 2005’s Cinderella Man, 2007’s American Gangster, 2016’s The Nice Guys, 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, 2023’s The Pope’s Exorcist, 2024’s Kraven the Hunter, and more.
What else do we know about the new Highlander reboot?
Plot details for the new Highlander movie have not yet been revealed. The project was originally in development at Lionsgate but is now instead being made for Amazon MGM Studios.
Production on the film is expected to begin this coming fall. An exact release date has not yet been set, though Stahelski previously said it would likely arrive in either 2027 or 2028.
“When the mystical Russell Nash (Lambert) kills a man in a sword fight in a New York City parking lot, he leaves a sliver of an ancient weapon lodged in a car in the process,” a description of the original Highlander film reads. “After brilliant forensics specialist Brenda Wyatt (Roxanne Hart) recovers evidence of the mysterious weapon, she and her partner, Lt. Frank Moran (Alan North), embark on an investigation Of Nash that will land them in the middle of a dangerous, centuries-old feud between powerful immortals.”
