Why Clayface Was Added to DCU’s Gods & Monsters Slate

After many fans voiced their opinions about the Clayface movie becoming the third entry in the updated DCU, James Gunn has explained his decision to release the film before the introduction of the DCU’s Batman. In a recent interview, the DC Studios co-CEO opened up about fast-tracking the Tom Rhys-led Clayface film and cited Mike Flanagan’s exemplary screenplay as the driving factor behind the scheduling choice.

James Gunn explains why DC is doing Clayface before Batman and Wonder Woman

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn clarified why he opted to set an earlier release date for the Clayface movie than the much-awaited Batman film in the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods & Monsters. Apart from praising Flanagan’s script for the project, the renowned filmmaker said that he just wanted good content for his revamped DCU.

Talking about the Clayface movie, Gunn noted, “Well, I think it was just we needed DCU content. Mike Flanagan is somebody who I’ve been friendly with for a long time, and he wrote me about Clayface. He texted me about it really early on in my DC journey. Just being honest, I did not think that was something that was going to happen, but he came in and he pitched the idea and I was like, ‘Oh s—! That’s cool.’ It’s a body horror movie. It’s a horror movie that, like any cool body horror movie, just happens to be in the DCU. And then he wrote the script, and the script was fantastic. We did not plan to do Clayface. That was really something he brought to us.”

Despite prioritizing the Clayface movie, Gunn has not forgotten about The Brave and the Bold, as evidenced by his statements in another recent interview. One of the five movies in the initial roster of DCU’s first chapter, Gods & Monsters, the Batman project is currently being written by an undisclosed writer, with Gunn himself supervising the process.

While fans wait for the Clayface movie, they can check out the DCU’s upcoming Superman film, which flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
