Armor Wars: Iron Man 2’s Sam Rockwell on if Justin Hammer Could Return
While updates regarding the MCU’s Armor Wars project have been few and far between in recent times, actor Sam Rockwell recently suggested that his Iron Man 2 character, Justin Hammer, could become the MCU’s Lex Luthor. In a recent interview, the Academy Award winner opened up about the possibility of returning as the entrepreneurial rival of Tony Stark, before explaining how the character could contribute to the current dynamics of the MCU.
Sam Rockwell discusses Justin Hammer’s possible return in Armor Wars
During his recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Rockwell addressed the potential appearance of Justin Hammer in the stalled Armor Wars project. While the veteran actor failed to provide a definitive update on the topic, he was able to cite some angles that Marvel could explore if Hammer were ever to return.
When asked if the ongoing discussions regarding his MCU return had any merits, Rockwell stated, “Well, yeah, there was talk of a series, but I think the movie thing would be exciting.” He then compared Hammer to DC’s Lex Luthor, particularly the version played by Gene Hackman in the Christopher Reeve-led Superman films, noting, “I don’t know what you get out of that guy. I mean, he is essentially Lex Luthor. It’s Gene Hackman Lex Luthor.”
Although Rockwell was unable to confirm if Justin Hammer was returning to the MCU for the Armor Wars project, he did clarify what the character could bring to the table if he made a comeback. “It’s a comedic device, that character, mostly. Although he was in prison, so it could get weird,” the 56-year-old actor said.
Sam Rockwell’s one and only appearance in the MCU occurred in 2010’s Iron Man 2, at the end of which, his character was arrested for aiding the movie’s antagonist, Whiplash. Since then, Rockwell has expressed his desire to reprise his role as Justin Hammer, particularly in Armor Wars. However, there has been no official update regarding the project in a very long time, with many speculating that Marvel Studios has canceled Armor Wars altogether.
