Sebastian Stan Gets a Winter Soldier Mask in New Thunderbolts* Concept Art

An artist who worked on Thunderbolts* shared concept art designs of Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier featuring a mask similar to the one he wore in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). Additionally, the metallic arm of the character is covered in these images, denoting a rather “casual” look.

Bucky’s Winter Soldier mask returns in Thunderbolts* concept art

Thunderbolts* artist Aleksi Briclot took to Instagram to share concept art designs of Bucky’s “casual” look. “Concept art for Bucky, the Winter Soldier in Thunderbolts*,” he wrote in the caption. “Exploring a ‘casual’ look. This time hiding his metallic arm. Also working on a variation for the helmet with slightly more skin visible.”

As Briclot mentioned, his concept art version of Bucky’s mask shows more skin than what appeared in Avengers: Winter Soldier. Notably, in Thunderbolts*, Bucky has become an elected member of the United States House of Representatives.

Hoping to aid the impeachment efforts against Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, he captures members of Thunderbolts so that they would testify at the trial. In that scene, Bucky is wearing a pair of shades.

Besides Thunderbolts*, Briclot has worked on MCU projects such as Captain Marvel (2019), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Black Widow (2021), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), and Loki Season 2 (2023).

As Bucky’s updated mask didn’t make it to the big screen, it remains unknown what impact, if any, it would have on the narrative. That mask could have been a reminder for Bucky and the general public of the fact that he used to be an assassin, and that could have complicated his story in the movie.

In the comments section of the aforementioned post, Briclot revealed that he made concept art designs of Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and key frames of other characters and indicated that he might share them later.
