DC’s James Gunn on if Sgt. Rock With Colin Farrell Is Really Canceled

Amid rumors suggesting that DC Studios has canceled the previously confirmed Sgt. Rock movie, James Gunn has come out to provide an update on the film’s current status. Despite the news first surfacing about the flick in November 2024, DC executives have shied away from sharing details regarding the project ever since. With recent speculations indicating that the movie has been axed, Gunn seems to have given fans some hope regarding its progress.

James Gunn says Sgt. Rock is not canceled

During his recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn remarked that contrary to popular opinion, the Sgt. Rock movie is still underway at DC Studios. However, the Guardians of the Galaxy director also highlighted some problems with the feature, noting that it has yet to reach a point where it would align with his creative plans for the DCU.

Talking about whether DC has effectively canceled Sgt. Rock flick or not, Gunn stated, “I feel like we’re in a pretty good place. We’re still moving forward, but it’s not going to be…What would Peter want me to say here?… So it’s still moving forward, but, yeah, right now it wasn’t exactly where I wanted it to be creatively, and so it needs to change a little bit.”

This update comes a few days after James Gunn revealed that he had pulled the plug on a confirmed DCU project due to its lacklustre screenplay. Without disclosing the movie he was referring to, Gunn stated in a recent interview, “Everybody wanted to make the movie. It was greenlit, ready to go. The screenplay wasn’t ready. And I couldn’t do a movie where the screenplay’s not good.”

Many have since theorized that the DC Studios co-CEO may have canceled the Sgt. Rock flick, which was in talks to feature The Penguin’s Colin Farrell in the lead. While Gunn’s latest comments suggest that the movie is still in the DCU slate, he has yet to confirm an official filming window for the project.
