Superman’s James Gunn Teases Favorite DC Project & Why It Hasn’t Been Revealed Yet

Superman director James Gunn disclosed in a recent interview that he has not revealed his “favorite thing” in the DCU yet. He explained that he was worried that it would get ripped off by other studios. As things currently stand in the fledgling franchise, Creature Commandos has come out. Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 are on their way. Supergirl has wrapped production, and Lanterns is expected to do the same next month. As for James Watkins’ Clayface, it will begin production later this year.

James Gunn is worried his favorite DCU project might get ripped off by other studios

Gunn revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the DCU hadn’t yet announced his “favorite thing” in the franchise. He admitted that they didn’t do so because of his concerns that other studios would copy it. “Then there’s another TV show that’s my favorite thing in all of this, that is hopefully getting made soon. It’s just my favorite thing,” Gunn began, and later added that the project had “not been announced at all.”

The filmmaker proceeded to note that some projects were “in pretty good shape in terms of coming up,” likely referring to those unveiled in January 2023. He continued, “There was one thing that I knew about from the very beginning, that when I pitched to David Zaslav what the DCU would be, I pitched to him, but we did not announce in that first meeting because I felt like it was too easy to rip off by another company.”

Gunn then underscored that this project was “one of the main things” in the franchise.

The fear of idea appropriation is not completely unfounded in Hollywood, given the industry’s brutal competitiveness. Despite the reported audience fatigue with the genre, superhero movies and TV shows remain popular and largely profitable ventures for studios.

Gunn’s Superman premieres in U.S. theaters on July 11, 2025. It will be the first cinematic entry in the DCU.
