Glen Powell Will Extinguish Deadly Wildfires in Ron Howard’s Next Firefighter Movie
Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell has officially been tapped to star in Amazon MGM Studios‘ untitled firefighter movie. The project hails from acclaimed filmmaker Ron Howard, who is no stranger to the story’s theme after previously directing 1991’s action thriller movie Backdraft – which also centered around firefighters.
Powell was most recently seen in 2024’s Twisters, which is a standalone sequel to the iconic 1996 disaster movie led by Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. He is currently attached to star in several high-profile projects, including Edgar Wright’s upcoming Stephen King movie The Running Man and J.J Abrams’ untitled sci-fi film, which will also star Jenna Ortega. The latter is currently in production. Later this year, Powell will also star in his first major TV project as the lead of Hulu’s newest comedy series Chad Powers.
What is Glen Powell’s firefighter movie about?
According to insider Jeff Sneider, the project won’t be a Backdraft sequel or remake. Instead, the story will center around “two disparate childhood friends who are now accomplished firefighters and face a deadly series of Texas blazes while navigating their relationship.”
The untitled project will be directed by Howard from a screenplay written by Christina Hodson, who was the one that pitched the idea for the movie’s story. In addition to leading the movie, Powell is also serving as a producer alongside Dan Cohen for Barnstorm. Howard, Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody are also producing for Imagine Entertainment, with Hodson also set as an executive producer. At the moment, the project has no release date yet.
