The History of Sound Release Date Set for Paul Mescal & Josh O’Connor Movie

After acquiring its North American distribution rights, Mubi has officially announced The History of Sound release date for the upcoming period romance drama, starring Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal and Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor. This comes after the movie had its world premiere at the recent 78th Cannes Film Festival, where it was one of the features that were nominated Palme d’Or and Queer Palm.

“In 1917, Lionel—a young, talented music student—meets David at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs,” reads the official synopsis. “This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the music they collect and preserve, will shape the course of Lionel’s life far beyond his own awareness.”

When is The History of Sound release date?

The History of Sound is now scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 12, 2025, pitting it directly against Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale and The Long Walk. The movie is also debuting in the same month as other high-profile movies such as The Conjuring : Last Rites, Him, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, and Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie.

The movie is directed by Oliver Hermanus from a screenplay written by Ben Shattuck, based on his acclaimed short story of the same name, which earned him a Pushcart Prize. It also stars Molly Price, Alison Bartlett, Chris Cooper, Hadley Robinson, Raphael Sbarge, Peter Mark Kendall, Emma Canning, Briana Middleton, Alessandro Bedetti, Alison Bartlett, and more.

It is produced by Lisa Ciuffetti, Oliver Hermanus, Andrew Kortschak, Sara Murphy, Thérèsa Ryan, Zhang Xin, Tatiana Bears, Lara Costa Calzado, Giovanni Pompili, Bruno Vernaschi-Berman, and Sean Wheelan. The creative team also includes cinematographer Alexander Dynan and editor Chris Wyatt.
