Snoop Dogg Biopic Finds Its Lead Actor & Director
So far, Universal has cranked out memorable biopics of hip-hop artists like Eminem‘s 8 Mile and N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton. Universal’s third hip-hop biopic will tell the story of American rapper, record producer, and actor Snoop Dogg. Co-produced by the Drop It Like It’s Hot rapper, the upcoming biopic has found its lead and director.
The Snoop Dogg biopic will be the first movie under Death Row Pictures’ deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios. The rapper already has ties with NBCUniversal as a judge for season 28 of The Voice. The upcoming movie was first announced to be in the works in 2022. The screenplay is co-written by Black Panther 2’s Joe Robert Cole.
The plot of the Snoop Dogg biopic will follow Calvin Broadus Jr. entering the world of West Coast hip-hop. Debuting as Snoop Doggy Dogg, he’ll be laying out sharp lyrics for Death Row Records and collaborating with Dr. Dre on Doggystyle. We’ll also see his friendship with Martha Stewart and his poolside moment with Michael Phelps at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Who will be portraying Snoop Dogg in the biopic?
As reported by Deadline, Outer Banks’ Jonathan Daviss will be portraying Snoop Dogg. The Houston native has also starred in movies like Age of Summer and the drama Edge of the World.
The news of Jonathan Daviss’ casting comes days after it was confirmed that Craig Brewer would be directing. He’s the American filmmaker responsible for music movies like Hustle & Flow, which won an Oscar for Best Original Song, and the Footloose remake. Brewer has also delved into the biopic genre with Dolemite Is My Name and the upcoming musical-drama Song Sung Blue starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet.
